Fenris ...

Fenris is an unusual name but that matches his slightly unusual character.  He can be difficult to get on with because he never feels certain about what people really think of him, but he projects a persona of charm and wins affection from others easily. He just needs to learn how to return the friendship he is offered unconditionally.

When Fenris was a little boy he was discovered tied with a set of baby-reins to a radiator, alone in the flat he shared with his mother. It was a hot day and the windows and curtains were closed; Fenris can still remember the flies buzzing around. A mouldering bowl of bread-and-milk and a baby bottle of milky tea was found next to the little boy, who was four years old. There are nice things Fenris can remember too, such as being rocked in his mother's arms as she sang to him in her sweet voice and a Johnny Cash song that his mother loved playing repeatedly, as it still plays in his mind when he's remembering his Mum.

Fenris' Mum had too many problems to be able to look after him properly. Some days she did not even have the energy to get out of bed at all, on those days her little boy stayed in his cot beside her bed, staring at her fixedly and opening his mouth in a wide baby-toothed grin everytime she became conscious enough to look at him.

The last day Fenris can remember from his early childhood was the day before he was discovered alone in the flat. His Mum had got out of bed that day and found the energy to get dressed and prepare some breakfast for her son. Then she actually took him to the park and pushed him on the swings. They threw some pieces of hardening bread to the ducks in the algae-ridden little pond; Fenris stamping his little feet in delight and shrieking with laughter enough to cause the ducks to fly off in alarm. Later she took Fenris back to their flat and prepared the bowl of bread-and-milk for him with the remainder of the bread they had taken for the ducks. Then his Mum retrieved his old baby bottle from the back of a cupboard, filling it with weak tea and folding it into his hand.

The next bit is what puzzled Fenris - his Mum strapped him into the baby reins she used to put on him in the days they went out more often. After that she led him over to the rusting radiator on the wall beside the little formica table, then she used a broken off piece of washing line to tie the baby reins to the radiator pipes. She pressed him gently to the floor and told him to lie down and close his eyes. He was an unquestioningly obedient child and so did as he was told. Fenris was faintly aware of being covered with a baby blanket and of the sound when the bowl was placed beside him on the floor. He vaguely remembers the door opening and closing with a faint draught of air then the sound of receding, descending footsteps on the stair outside their flat.

His mother had not locked the front door and a neighbour who had noticed her leaving the flat (which was a rare enough event) without her child the evening before, had enough initiative to enter the next morning and check if everything was OK. As she approached Fenris who was sitting up staring at her fixedly, he offered her the same wide-mouthed grin he had given to his mother.

Fenris has a tendency to become fixated on different things; at the moment it's fashion. He takes ages to get dressed every morning, worrying about which items of clothing look right together. However he's becominng a bit of a trend-setter at Haven Hope and is even inspiring Seth to become a little more adventurous with his wardrobe! Poppy's discovered a willing model in Fenris for her own fashion designs, she's also the one Fenris will talk to most openly and has the knack of being able to calm him down when his anger begins to boil up inside.

Fenris loves most kinds of music and chills out by singing when he's alone and playing the guitar.
